Recordings From Tanda Pits
Site Specific sound installation - Field Recordings, Remote Speaker, Cable, Candles, Well
Tanda Pits are a series of around 240 circular pits located at a hilltop site close to the town of Mityana in Central Uganda. Ugandan folklore states that the pits were created by Walumbe, the pesonification or god of death in the Gandan legend of Kintu, a creation story of the Bagandan people of Uganda.
On a research trip to Uganda in 2016 a series of recordings were made by lowering field recording devices into the pits to make recordings of the atmosphere within.
For the work 'Recordings From Tanda Pits' one approximately 14 minute recording from this series made at Tanda Pits was played back via a remote speaker suspended within an old and disused well beneath the 7-Star Gallery in Berlin Mitte.
